Your community association can win up to $5,000 by keeping your neighborhood clean. From the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhoods:

Last week Mayor Rawlings-Blake was joined by Department of Public Works Director Al Foxx, city employees, sponsors, and community leaders to announce the City’s first-ever Clean Community Competition, to be held during the Mayor’s Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 21. It was another busy week in Annapolis as I introduced several bills (more on that below), spoke to marriage equality advocates about the many legal strides made by the LGBT community over the past 10 years, held our first set of bill hearings in the Environmental Matters Committee, and heard the Governor deliver his State of the State speech.

Text from remarks delivered by Del. Maggie McIntosh to members and supporters of Equality MD and marriage equality advocates on February 1, 2012 in Annapolis, MD:

Until 2001 it was legal to fire or not hire, to deny housing or other services to persons who were open – or even perceived to be – gay or lesbian.

That changed with the election of Governor Paris Glendening. He created a commission to document the discrimination that existed in Maryland towards our community. In 2001 we passed the Antidiscrimination Act of 2001 giving us protection against discrimination in housing, employment or other public accommodations.

Seven years ago Equality MD and advocates took a new approach. Never believing at that time that we had the votes for Marriage Equality, we developed a strategy of introducing legislation that was heard in numerous committees. It was our way of educating our colleagues – again – to inequities facing same sex couples in our state.

We were successful!
