Use it or Lose It
Many homeowners are not taking advantage of the Homestead Tax Credit. In fact, more than 65% of Baltimore City homeowners have not yet applied. If you are a Baltimore City homeowner you are eligible to apply. The Maryland Homestead Tax Credit is a property tax credit that helps homeowners who occupy their property cut their property taxes by capping the property tax assessment increase allowed. Homeowners must apply before December 31, 2012 or lose it for next year. Don’t miss out. Spread the word. Ask your neighbors if they have taken advantage of the Homestead Tax Credit.
Here’s how to apply:

  • You can request an application by email: hcredit@dat.state.md.us (Be sure to mention your home is in Baltimore City)
  • Subject line: Request for Homestead Tax Credit Application
  • Sample text request: Please email  my Homestead Tax Credit Application to (address in Baltimore City)
  • You can request an application by phone at 410-767-2165 (Making a request by phone could take up to 10 days to arrive. All completed applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2012)

If you have already applied:

  • You can check the status of your application by going to dat.state.md.us and click on the Real Property page. Go to the page for your specific property. Check the status of your Homestead Property Tax  application at the bottom of the page.

Only owner occupants are eligible to apply despite age, income or current property value. For Baltimore City homeowners the Homestead program caps annual assessment increases at 4% preventing excessive property tax increases from year to year.

This is a valuable tax credit for city residents. Make sure to apply and share this information with your neighbors that may be eligible.
